LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA), the national peak body for LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing, congratulates the re-elected Albanese government on its success in the 2025 federal election.
“LHA looks forward to continuing to work with the government and build on the progress made during its first term to strengthen the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ people,” said Nicky Bath, CEO of LHA.
“The re-elected government must act quickly and continue to demonstrate its commitment to equitable health outcomes for LGBTIQ+ people.
“The solutions are on the table, and we need strong political will to implement them. With the release of the National Action Plan for the Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ People 2025–2035 (the National Action Plan), the government has a clear and community-informed roadmap for success,” Bath said.
The National Action Plan outlines five national priorities:
- driving system-wide leadership and cultural change through community-led approaches
- strengthening preventive healthcare and building health literacy
- improving the accessibility, availability and safety of services
- building capability and capacity across the mainstream workforce
- enhancing research, data and evaluation to track progress and ensure accountability.
LHA welcomed the government’s pre-election commitment of $10 million to provide inclusive, culturally safe healthcare for LGBTIQ+ Australians.
“This funding must ensure that LGBTIQ+ community-controlled organisations are supported to work in partnership with generalist healthcare providers to build the capacity and capability of healthcare workers, remove barriers to care, and improve health outcomes in their jurisdictions,” said Bath.
“The government has been mandated by the nation to advance its policy platform, and it can move forward with confidence and pride as it strives to eliminate the health disparities that LGBTIQ+ individuals continue to face.
“The election shows that Australians are not interested in culture wars and now is the time to ensure that the health and wellbeing needs of all LGBTIQ+ people are met. LHA and its member organisations stand ready to continue working with the government to build a future in which all LGBTIQ+ people can thrive,” Bath said.
