LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) advocates for access to safe, affirming and accessible gender-affirming care for trans and gender-diverse young people in Queensland, informed by clinical expertise, evidence, and the lived experience of young people and their families.
The Queensland Government’s ban on new patients under 18 accessing gender-affirming hormone therapy in the public health system creates a significant barrier to equitable health and wellbeing. The continuation of the ban prolongs uncertainty for young people who should be able to access timely, evidence-based care, and places avoidable pressure on families and health services.
In this context, LHA supports the action taken by the LGBTI Legal Service in seeking judicial review of the ban. The legal challenge reflects unresolved questions about the decision-making process and highlights the impact that health policies and systems have on the health and wellbeing of young people and their families.
As the national peak body for LGBTIQ+ health and wellbeing, LHA is committed to working constructively with governments, including Queensland Health, to support inclusive health systems that optimise health outcomes for LGBTIQ+ people. LHA stands ready to support the timely restoration of safe and affirming services for trans and gender-diverse young people in Queensland.
