The final report of the Aged Care Royal Commission is out, and we want to hear from you. - LGBTIQ+ Health Australia

The final report of the Aged Care Royal Commission is out, and we want to hear from you.

There are many issues of concern for LGBTIQ+ older people accessing and using aged care services. Carers, loved ones and LGBTIQ+ aged care workers also face regular challenges. Last year we made 7 submissions to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and presented in person at the diversity hearing. Our aim was to ensure that any new models of aged care take our needs into account. You can access those submissions here https://www.lgbtiqhealth.org.au/submissions_aged_care_rc

The Royal Commission have now released their final report, with 148 recommendations.  https://agedcare.royalcommission.gov.au/publications/final-report

We are disappointed that none of the recommendations specifically address the issues we raised. But many of the recommendations offer opportunities. A new rights-based aged care act, a commitment to a robust complaints system, a star-rating system for services, extra funding for visitors schemes and the opportunity to design systems for diversity all present possibilities for improving the experience of older LGBTIQ+ people accessing aged care services.

We are currently putting together a response to the final report and recommendations.  We’ll use this report to ensure our issues are built into all the new initiatives resulting from these recommendations.

We want to hear from you.

  1. What are the critical issues for older LGBTIQ+ people which are not addressed by the Royal Commission?
  2. If your organisation offers services for older LGBTIQ+ people, how will they be impacted by these recommendations?
  3. If you access aged care services, for yourself or a loved one, how do you see the changes impacting you?
  4. If you are an aged care worker, how do these recommendations impact your work?
