Use of the “I” in the LGBTIQ+ acronym in Australian health research - Members
Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 01:00 PM
ZoomIntersex Awareness Day, held annually on 26 October, provides an opportunity to increase awareness of the experiences, health needs and human rights of people with innate variations of sex characteristics.
The “I” is increasingly included within LGBTIQ+ acronyms in Australian health policy, research and data. However, inclusion within an acronym does not necessarily mean that intersex people are meaningfully represented in research, that research methods appropriately capture their experiences, or that findings provide useful evidence about their health and wellbeing.

Significant gaps remain in Australian evidence about the health and wellbeing of people with innate variations of sex characteristics. Alongside examining how intersex people have been represented within broader LGBTIQ+ research, there is value in considering how intersex-specific research can build a stronger and more useful evidence base.
This webinar will bring these two perspectives together, examining the use of the “I” within LGBTIQ+ health research and introducing the Interconnect Health Research, which aims to improve understanding of the health and wellbeing of people with innate variations of sex characteristics in Australia.
