Insights from the 2026 National Suicide Prevention Conference

To support national dialogue and collaboration, LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, ACON and Switchboard Victoria convened a breakfast event during the 2026 National Suicide Prevention Conference (NSPC). Bringing together practitioners, advocates, researchers, community leaders and people with lived and living experience from across Australia, the discussion explored current challenges, promising practices, systems reform opportunities and priorities for national coordination in LGBTIQA+ suicide prevention.

Effective suicide prevention for LGBTIQA+ communities is not solely about responding in moments of crisis. It is about building the conditions that enable people to feel safe, connected and supported across their lives, and ensuring that when people do seek support, they are met with understanding, flexibility and respect.

Suicide prevention must include a foundational focus on intersectionality, creating spaces for leadership across different parts of our communities to support responses that meet the diverse needs of all LGBTIQA+ people.
