Policy and Research Webinar - See yourself in data: Estimates and characteristics of LGBTI+ populations in Australia

See yourself in data: Estimates and characteristics of LGBTI+ populations in Australia.

This webinar will present findings from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) latest analysis on LGBTI+ populations, based on data collected across multiple national surveys. The ABS team will explore the methodology, key statistics, and insights from their first experimental estimates of LGBTI+ populations, shedding light on the representation, diversity, and characteristics of these communities. The session will also discuss the data’s potential implications for policymaking, service delivery, and future research.

Did you know that at 910,600 people, the ABS found that the number of LGBTI+ people aged 16 years and over in Australia is almost the combined population of ACT and Tasmania? This webinar will introduce key findings from the recent ABS publication: Estimates and characteristics of LGBTI+ populations in Australia. We will cover how we complied the data, including the input we received from experts from the community during the project and how the data may be used by policy makers and people who deliver services. We will also provide a brief update on ABS’ plans for the 2026 Census.
