The Australian Government is reviewing the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to ensure it aligns with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and addresses recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission. The review aims to strengthen protections, improve access to justice, and promote inclusion for people with disability across all areas of life.
In their joint submission, Inclusive Rainbow Voices (IRV) and LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) highlight the urgent need for reforms that recognise intersectional discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ+ people with disability. The submission calls for a modernised definition of disability, a positive duty on institutions to prevent discrimination, stronger enforcement powers for the Australian Human Rights Commission, and removal of discriminatory exemptions such as those in migration law. It recommends aligning reforms with the National Action Plan for the Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ People 2025–2035 and the ABS 2020 Standard, and ensuring LGBTIQ+ community-controlled and disability organisations are resourced to lead change.
