Policy Submission: Measuring Outcomes for First Nations Communities

Policy Submission: Measuring Outcomes for First Nations Communities

The consultation by the Senate Select Committee on Measuring Outcomes for First Nations Communities aims to address gaps in the Closing the Gap framework and ensure more accurate, inclusive, and culturally appropriate data collection and policy development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It seeks input on how national measurement frameworks can better reflect the lived experiences, challenges, and strengths of First Nations communities, including LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy (LGBTIQ+SB) people.

LHA worked in partnership with 2Spirits to prepare a submission that highlights the systemic exclusion of LGBTIQ+SB First Nations people from national data and policy frameworks, contributing to poorer health, education, and employment outcomes. It calls for the adoption of the ABS 2020 Standard in First Nations data collection, increased funding for culturally safe programs, targeted education and employment initiatives, and the inclusion of wellness metrics in the Closing the Gap framework to better reflect holistic wellbeing.
