Submission on Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 - LGBTIQ+ Health Australia

Submission on Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) has responded to the proposed ban on social media use for people under 16, highlighting the significant impact this could have on young LGBTIQ+ people.

Social media plays a vital role in providing peer support, community connection, and access to affirming information for many young people navigating their sense of self. LHA's submission calls for greater consultation with young people from diverse backgrounds to understand their online needs and for protections that ensure their wellbeing and access to essential online resources. The submission also recommends targeted strategies to mitigate harm while maintaining safe and supportive online spaces for young LGBTIQ+ people.
