The 2025 Australian federal election will be held on Saturday 3 May to elect members of the 48th Parliament of Australia. All seats of the House of Representatives and 40 of the 76 seats in the Senate will be contested.
During the election campaign, LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) seeks commitment from candidates across the political spectrum to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for LGBTIQ+ people.
The key priorities outlined below reflect areas where urgent action is needed to ensure equitable access to healthcare, support services, and policy protections.
Our foremost priority is the National Action Plan for the Health and Wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ People 2025–2035. Implementing this plan is central in transforming healthcare and ensuring LGBTIQ+ Australians have access to the high-quality care they deserve.
Other priorities include:
- a targeted approach to mental health and suicide prevention in LGBTIQ+ communities
- national coordination and capacity building on sexual, domestic and family violence
- sustainable resourcing for programs supporting people with innate variations in sex characteristics
- addressing service gaps for LGBTIQ+ families
- overcoming barriers to access of sexual and reproductive healthcare
- ensuring safe and culturally appropriate aged care services
- accessible and affordable gender affirming care in the public health system
- providing equality and opportunity for LGBTIQ+ people with disability
- investment in LGBTIQ+ inclusive crisis and long-term housing solutions
- support for LGBTIQ+ carers
- investment in LGBTIQ+ community-controlled health and wellbeing organisations
