Policy Submission: Comments on the National Registration Scheme for Personal Care Workers in Aged Care

Ensuring culturally sensitivity among personal care workers is essential to aged care providers ability to provide inclusive care and support to LGBTI older people. We welcome this review of the registration of personal care workers.

LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) believes that there is need for workforce training and capacity building, to help sensitise all workers in the aged care system, including personal care workers. This includes how cultural, familial and institutional discrimination results in some LGBTI older people having fraught relationships with family members and/or aged care providers. LHA’s Silver Rainbow program provides an effective mechanism to ensure institutions and organisations achieve such competency.
