The entire aged care system needs to be re-designed so that LGBTI older people are at the centre of the system rather than resorting to ‘safety nets’ or adding things onto the system to make it inclusive.
Between October 2019 and June 2020, The National LGBTI Health Alliance (The Alliance) made seven submissions to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. These submissions used material gathered from a series of consultations with LGBTI elders, their family, friends and carers in a number of locations around the country, as well as input from online surveys from our members and the broader community.
We are also ran 2 online surveys, the findings have informed the below submissions. One with general questions for people who may not be able to attend a face-to-face consultation and also one specifically aimed at the Bisexual community.
The Royal Commission is still currently ongoing.
