Between binaries: nonbinary and plurisexual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences
Wednesday, November 04, 2026 at 01:00 PM
ZoomWhat can we learn when we stop asking people to fit neatly into categories and listen to the whole story?
Between binaries centres the life stories of four nonbinary plurisexual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, exploring culture, gender, sexual orientation, family, mental health and belonging as interconnected parts of their lives.
Join researchers Amber Johnson and Emerson Zerafa-Payne for a conversation about the stories at the heart of this research, the Indigenous Storying approach used to honour them, and what they ask of researchers, policymakers and health services seeking to genuinely see and respond to the whole person.

Presentation by
Amber Johnson (she/her) is a PhD candidate at the University of Southern Queensland and a senior mental health social worker and clinician with Queensland Health. Her academic and clinical work focuses on psychology, sexuality, gender studies, and mental health support for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Emerson Zerafa-Payne (he/him) is a lecturer in the School of Education and the College for First Nations at the University of Southern Queensland.
Members, including staff, volunteers and delegates of LHA Full, Regular, Affiliate and Associate member organisations can attend free as part of their supporter benefits.

Wednesday, November 18, 2026 at 11:30 AM
ZoomLGBTIQ+ Health Australia, ACON and Switchboard Victoria convened a breakfast event during the 2026 National Suicide Prevention Conference (NSPC). Bringing together practitioners, advocates, researchers, community leaders and people with lived and living experience from across Australia, the discussion explored current challenges, promising practices, systems reform opportunities and priorities for national coordination in LGBTIQA+ suicide prevention.

This webinar will:
- Reflect on the insights captured in the report
